Grand Prix du Disque

About

The idea behind the Competition is to award prizes to and promote the best Chopin recordings made by phonographic producers around the world.

The ‘Grand Prix du Disque Frédéric Chopin’ International Phonographic Competition was first held in 1985. Its originators were musicologists Stanisław Dybowski and Grzegorz Michalski. The next two editions were held in 1987 and 1990 respectively. Later it was decided that the jury would evaluate submitted recordings every five years. Since its fourth edition in 1995, the ‘Grand Prix du Disque Frédéric Chopin’ has been an event accompanying the International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw.

Prizes in the form of medals and diplomas are awarded to phonographic producers for their recordings. The Competition logo can be placed on award-winning CDs.

Until 1995 prizes were awarded in four categories:

  1. Piano works
  2. Works for piano and orchestra
  3. Chamber works and songs
  4. Re-released historical recordings

From the fifth edition of the ‘Grand Prix du Disque Frédéric Chopin’ in 2000 prizes were awarded in two categories:

  1. Contemporary recordings
  2. Historical recordings
